My soundcard is a PCMCIA Echo Indigo io (very solid drivers and PCMCIA taxes cpu less than USB/FW) and I'm running Windows XP SP3. I'm using a Toshiba Tecra M5 laptop with a 1.66Ghz Centrino Duo and 2GB of Ram. The processor useage in V3 seems better to me than in 2.3. if only I could play such a "random progression to test the sound." That was good stuff SK! I don't get a chance to play too many grand pianos, but I'm pretty sure that the sound I was hearing is unatural. It almost sounded as if there was some wierd LFO or looping (I know, how can there be looping if there's no samples.) going on.

For instance in the demo that SK posted, the highest note he played during that end run (at 1:34 I believe), there was some weird liveliness to the harmonic. While I really like this new version it's not perfect. It would be one thing if the V-Piano was the first modelled piano ever created (which some of their ads would have you believe.), but unless the new PHAIII action is earth-shatteringly realistic, why would anybody pay 10 times more money for unproven technology? But I digress.
#Pianoteq pianissimo update#
This type of update to Pianoteq makes me wonder how in the world Roland's yet-to-be-released V-Piano is going to have any impact in the market whatsoever. I really can't remember exactly what it was that I didn't like so I can't really compare version 3 directly to older ones and say "this, this, and this is better than before." I just know that I like this demo. I was not so impressed by previous versions of Pianoteq.

I'm looking forward to using this plug-in as my main piano now (instead of the onboard MP9500 piano) and in the future porting this to a Muse/SMPro box would be really satisfying for live use. There's some great sounding distortion/overdrive on one of the Rhodes patches. More than likely they'll fall short in some peoples desire for 'bark' but after not really needing a rhodes plug-in (I have SRX-12) I'm now actually Gassing over having this add-on inside the computer. I had listened to the Rhodes & Wurly demos on the site and not been at all impressed but after playing them I had to revise my opinion. I had been almost regretting spending such a large amount of money (relatively for me even though I took advantage of the Christmas reduced price) on a piano plug-in but the improvements in V3 have quelled that feeling. The basic tone of V3 (I spent most time with the C3 model) is noticeably improved although I wasn't amazingly impressed with 2.3's tone. Very happy with this addition and I hope to spend some time trying to emulate the mic techniques used in solo piano recordings in order to help match tones when transcribing stuff. Well, after tweaking around with it I can say that it's very successful in changing the tone and ambience of the piano. My number 1 thing on the wishlist (apart from just a general "make it more realistic") for V3 was adjustable mic positioning. Take some of my comments with a pinch of salt though as i'll have to spend some more time with it to get really accustomed. I've upgraded to 3 and had a 15 minute play around with this so far and i'm pretty pleased with the update as a whole. That might change with version 3, which has way more parameters. I usually tweak the presets, but haven't done any really major sound design with the interface yet in Pianoteq 2. Maybe this one will mimic the Fazioli? Well, they always say they're not trying to do that, but some of the other presets are clearly meant to be Yammies or Steinways.

I can hardly wait to try out the new C3 classical model. These new ones from Modartt will be interesting to try out, and it indicates they will continue pushing PM into related instruments. I love Scarbee's libraries, even though I had hoped originally to go the PM route for e-pianos (the ones I auditioned didn't cut it).

Instead we get this major overhaul for free, with a trial edition of physically modeled electric pianos a mere 49 euros in price!

The hints they dropped were that there would be a Pro Edition maybe later this tear, for an undetermined extra fee. Yep, spotted this mentioned at Gearslutz today, and quite frankly was surprised as we had no hint this was coming.
